Trojans take season opener: Hicks and Johnson lead Troy past Fort Valley State

The Troy Trojans opened up the 2018 season with a 95-60 win over the Fort Valley State Panthers on Tuesday night inside Trojan Arena.
The win gives the Trojans their sixth straight home opening win.
“I saw some things tonight that really pleased us as a coaching staff,” said head coach Phil Cunningham. “There are some things we need to work on. Anytime you can get a win, we’ll take it. Had some good individual performances and I was really pleased in the second half with our young guys.”
The Trojans shot 51 percent and outscored the Panthers 32-18 in the paint.
The Trojans had 11 players get on the scoreboard and three score in double figures led by Alex Hicks who scored 19. Javon Johnson added 18 and Zay Williams had 10.
The Trojans forced the Panthers to shoot 42 percent. They forced as many turnovers, 20, as Panthers had made shots.
The Trojans held the Panthers to 21 first half points. The Panthers shot 29 percent, making five of their 17 total shots.
The Troy defense forced 16 Panther turnovers in the opening half to score 19 of their 41 points.
The Trojans had eight players get on the scoreboard in the first half. Hicks led the way with 11 points and four rebounds.
As a team, the Trojans led by as many as 20 points after shooting 44 percent. Johnson scored eight straight points in the first half for the Trojans to stretch Troy’s lead to 16 at 29-13. The Trojans went into the locker room at halftime leading 41-21.
Hicks and Johnson combined to score 17 of Troy’s 19 points to begin the second half. The Trojans led by as many as 39 points on their way to a 35-point win.
The Trojans will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to take on St. Louis in the Barclays Center Classic.
