The Charles Henderson Trojans swept the Luverne Tigers in their home opener on Monday night.

The Lady Trojans began the evening with a 74-12 win over the Lady Tigers, before varsity boys finished the sweep with a 75-40 win over the Tigers.

The win for the Lady Trojans gives them a 3-0 start to the season after they swept their two games in the Holliday Hoopsgiving Tournament in Atlanta on Friday and Saturday.

The Lady Trojans largest lead kept growing nearly every position before the game ended with the Trojans winning by 62.

“They were playing with heart and playing together,” said head coach Dyneshia Jones. “When we play a team like this we focus on the little things that will be important down the road.”

With the lopsided score being what it was, Jones was able to get all eight of her players meaningful playing time.

“That’s very important,” Jones said. “They are part of the team. They come to practice every day and work hard just like the rest of them so it’s important.”

Monday marked the first time that the Lady Trojans played in their home gym since winning last season’s state championship.

“It means a lot,” Jones said. “I’m glad we are back in action; it’s been a while. Playing at home is always great.”

Tatyana Siler led all scorers with 20 points, while Maori Davenport had 16 and Niaira Jones added 9.

The Trojan boys won their third consecutive game on Monday night to improve their record on the season to 3-1.

Despite leading by 16 at the break, head coach Doug Branson thought his team looked anxious during the game’s early minutes.

“I thought we started out anxious,” Branson said. “A little over excited at home in front of their family and friends. We were on the road and won a couple of games and the student body had been talking about it all day, so everyone was excited. We settled in and Luverne came in scrappy and they are trying to play fast. Once we settled in and started running our stuff offensively, I thought we had a little bit of success.”

The Trojans were able to find a lot of their offense in the paint on Monday night, despite not being able to finish at the rim at the level coach Branson would have liked.

“I thought we could have finished more,” Branson said. “I thought our big guys were caught up being fast instead of being big. They were trying to out quick little guys when I thought we should have slowed down a little bit and be big. It’s a learning process and we have talked to them about it.”

Marcus Grant led the Trojans with 17 points, while Terrell Sistrunk had 16. Keith Wheeler also finished in double figures with 13, while Zack Henderson had 8.

The Trojans are scheduled to back home on Thursday when they host Barbour County.

“This is a process and we have to grind,” Branson said. “We have to respect each other and we have to respect the game. If we’re down 5 or 10, we are working to get back down to five or even. It’s always a grind. We can never be complacent and we can never give in.”
