The Goshen Eagles had some fun in their 69-34 win over New Brockton in the opening round of the Class 2A Area 4 Tournament on Tuesday evening.
“We’re trying to keep it entertaining out there,” said Eagles head coach Daniell Powell. “I’m trying to keep my kids happy and excited about playing basketball. We are trying to get ready to play Samson in the area championship.”
The win secured both a spot in the area championship as well as a spot in the sub-regional tournament.
“That’s great being able to make the postseason beyond the area tournament,” Powell said. “It’s always a big deal and a big accomplishment.”
RaQuan Martin led the way with 15 points, while Dakari Pelton and Keshawn Boyd had 13.
Defense played the way for the Eagles early on Tuesday night. The Eagles held the Gamecocks to six first-quarter points and went into the second leading 18-6.
The Eagles held New Brockton to 19 first half points and went into the locker room leading 39-19.
“We went out there and played our game,” Powell said. “We watched the first game between Samson and Zion Chapel. Samson took Zion Chapel a little lightly and I told the guys don’t take anybody lightly. Come out here and dominate from the beginning and put the game away.”
After emptying the bench in the second half, the Eagles led by as many as 38 points after they controlled the fast-break opportunities.
The Eagles will take on Samson on Friday night beginning at 6 p.m.
“We are going to have to stop their shooters,” Powell said. “We are going to have to play great defense. If we can get off to a good start and play defense, I think we will get a win.”
