Police have arrested a former Troy student indicted on a charge of first-degree rape in connection with an incident on campus in the spring of 2016.
Herb Reeves, dean of student services, said Isaac Addai, 22, of Nigeria, was arrested Wednesday while back in Troy after being indicted on the charge.
“In Spring 2016, we had a sexual assault in a vehicle near the Arboretum,” Reeves said. “he was brought before the student conduct board and expelled prior to the district attorney sending it to the grand jury.”
When the grand jury decided there was enough evidence to bring the case to trial, police had a warrant to arrest Addai and serve the indictment, but had not been able to locate him.
“The warrant has been sitting out there and they’ve been trying to serve it on him,” Reeves said. “He has apparently been going back and forth to Atlanta and, he told us, home – which is Nigeria.”
Reeves said Troy police stopped Addai while he was back in Troy Wednesday and found the warrant for his arrest.
“They contacted the U.S. Marshals and they detained him,” Reeves said. “Our investigator went down and served a warrant on him and he will now have to go to trial.”
Addai and the victim knew each other, Reeves said.
“They knew of each other,” Reeves said. “He took advantage when the opportunity arose after the victim had told him no. He’ll have to go to court they’ll have to decide.”
First-degree rape is a Class A Felony punishable by 20 years to life in prison. Addai is currently incarcerated in the Pike County Jail.
