Charles Henderson High got solid pitching from their starters in both games Monday afternoon to open the 2019 season at Troy University’s Riddle-Pace Field, but the Trojans split with the Marbury Bulldogs, winning the first game 8-1 but falling in the second game 4-2.

CHHS sophomore Walker Stallworth was dealing in the first game, allowing no runs on only one hit over 5 1/3 innings to earn the win, striking out three and walking only one.

Senior righty Brock Huner, who sat out all of last season with an ankle injury, returned on the mound to start the second game and give a solid performance, allowing only one earned run.

“I thought we pitched really well, and got two really good outings from Brock and Walker, our two starters,” said CHHS Head Coach Matt Whitton. “They gave us a chance to win and that is all you can ask your starting pitching to do. I thought both guys that came out of the pen with Caden (Bryan) and (Jackson) Giles both came in and pitched very well. They kept the game where it was, and we had our chances to score, especially in the second game and did not take advantage of it, but that’s what I told the guys after the game. That’s part of early season baseball, and we’ve got to be better in situational hitting. But all in all I as pleased.”

CHHS took an early 1-0 lead in the first game when Chance Pollard scored on a single by catcher Cole McWhorter, and went up 2-0 in the third inning when Lawson Scarbrough walked and scored on a passed ball.

Bryan walked to lead off the bottom of the fourth, Anthony Gurba singled, J.B. Sanders was hit by a pitch, Pollard drove a deep sacrifice fly to score a run, Scarbrough doubled for an RBI, McWhorter was intentionally walked, and Stallworth hit a sharp grounder which was thrown past the first baseman, allowing all base runners to score for the 7-0 lead.

Scarbrough walked in the sixth and later scored for the 8-0 lead. Marbury scored their only run in the top of the seventh inning for the 8-1 final.

CHHS had four hits as Scarbrough, McWhorter, Will Reeves and Gurba had one hit apiece.

In the second game Marbury scored three runs in the top of the third inning and added a single run in the fifth for a 4-0 lead. CHHS scored one in the bottom of the fifth when Sanders reached with one out and scored on a double by Pollard.

Pollard scored the final run for CHHS in the bottom of the seventh inning after he walked, Scarbrough singled and a Marbury error allowed Pollard to score for what would be the 4-2 final.

In the second game Scarbrough had two hits, while Pollard, Stallworth and Sanders had one hit apiece.

CHHS is in action again Thursday, 4:30 p.m. in Troy against Dothan High.
