The Troy City Council held the first reading Tuesday, Feb. 12, of an ordinance that would provide retirement incentives to certain employees in an effort to also save the city money.

The retirement incentives package would allow unclassified employees to take an early retirement and keep their city health insurance paid for as well as remaining employed with the city in another capacity with a salary of under $31,000.

The council has been discussing the possible move for a month as they consider whether the retirement incentives should be offered only to unclassified employees or classified employees as well.

There will be a second reading of the ordinance at the council’s next meting on Tuesday, Feb. 26.

The council also approved several liquor licenses during the meeting.

The council unanimously approved a liquor license transfer from the owner of the Red Apple “doing business as” the Red Apple to the license being in the name of the Red Apple.

The council also unanimously approved a retail beer and wine license at a planned new Dollar General location on U.S. Highway 29.

The council unanimously approved a special retail  more than 30 days liquor license to Kendall Hall.

Ownen Allan Wood said the license would allow the business to sell alcohol to users of the event venue.

The license does not allow the business to open to sell alcohol to the general public, but only at the special events coordinated at the facility.

A special event liquor license was granted unanimously for the National Wild Turkey Federation annual banquet.

The council will meet again on Tuesday, Feb. 26 and will host local students in its annual “Mayor fro a Day program.”

The executive committee will meet at 4 p.m. upstairs at City and the council will convene in the City Council Chambers at 5 p.m.
