Braxton Jordan, a Banks School student,  showed the Grand Champion Steer and the Supreme Champion Heifer at the 77th Annual Steer and Heifer Show at Cattlemen Park Arena on Saturday.

Gradyn Wesley showed the Reserve Champion Steer and Greer Jones showed the Reserve Heifer.

Tammy Powell, Pike County Cattlewomen’s Association and volunteer with the heifer and steer show, said only two steers were entered in this year’s show as compared to 17 heifers.

“The reason for the small number of steers is that most young people want to hold on to their heifers so they can be bred,” Powell said. “These heifers are good breed animals for young people who want to start their own herds. The heifer show is a good starting place for a future business but the steers usually go off to the meat market.”

Powell said all participants in the show had worked with their animals for about a year getting them ready for the show.

“Showing calves is a big commitment,” Powell said. “It takes long and hard work and dedication. It was evident that the calves in this show had been well cared for. We congratulate each and every one of these young people on a job well done.”

Top finishers in the Showmanship division were: Seniors-Anna Grace Thomas, first; Gracie Redmon, second; and Brandon Cuahua, third. Intermediate Division: Braxton Jordan, first; Anna Belle Wesley, second; and Wyatt Johnson, third.

In the Junior division, Greer Jones took first place; Gradyn Wesley, second; Jack Redmon, third; and Preston Hughes, fourth.

Steers were judged in two weight classes with Gradyn Wesley’s calf taking first place at 1115 pounds. Braxton Jordan also took first place in the weight division. His steer weighed in at 1,240 pounds.

There were six classes of heifers, which were divided  by weight of the calf. The Supreme Heifer was shown by Braxton Jordan and the Reserve Heifer by Greer Jones.

In Class 1, Anna Bell Wesley took first place with a calf weight of 735 pounds. Gracie Redmon took second place with a calf weighing 770 pounds. Preston Hughes’ calf at 800 pounds took third.

In Class 2, Greer Jones was first with a calf weight of 890 pounds. Preston Hughes was second with a calf that weighed in at 835 pounds . Brandon Cuahua’s steer was third at 905 pounds.

Wyatt Johnston took first place in Class 3, with a heifer weighing 935 pounds. Gracie Redmon’s calf was second and weighed 975 pounds. Jack Redmon took third place with a calf that weighted 925 pounds.

In Class 4, first place went to Braxton Jordan with a calf the weighed in at 1080 pounds. Gradyn Wesley’s calf was second with a weight of 1085 pounds. Anna Grace Thomas was third. Her calf weighed 1020 pounds. At fourth place was Anna Belle Wesley. Her calf weighed 1085 pounds

Brandon Cuahua took to honors in Class 5 with a calf that weighed 1260 pounds. In second place was Wyatt Johnston with a 1215 pound calf and, in third place was Jack Redmon with his calf that weighed 1160 pounds.

Cuahua also took first place in Class 6. His calf weighed 1750 pounds.
