Charles Henderson High freshman left-hander Darryl Lee was masterful as he hurled a one-hit shutout to lead Charles Henderson High to a 4-0 win over Andalusia Tuesday night at Hogan’s Hole on the campus of CHHS.

Lee had a no-hitter for six innings before Garrett Davis of Andalusia led off the top of the seventh with a single to left field to break up the no-hit bid.

He then retired the next three batters, getting his complete-game shutout, allowing only one hit, walking three and striking out eight.

“I can’t say enough about the performance of Darryl Lee,” said CHHS Head Coach Matt Whitton after the game. “He was three outs away from throwing a no-hit, complete game shutout, and we were concerned he was going to reach his pitch count, but he buckled down and got the final outs and finished the game.

“I am super proud of him and super proud of our entire team. Andalusia did a good job of keeping us at bay. We knew we did not play good two weeks ago at Andalusia, and credit to them, that’s a good ball club. They are going to win a bunch of ball games. They are well coached, they are disciplined. I told our guys not to let anyone out-compete us. That’s what we’ve done the last couple of weeks, we have just competed and found a way to win ballgames.”

The victory improves CHHS to 11-3 on the season, and gives them their seventh consecutive win. Andalusia, winners of the Class 4A state championship a year ago, handed CHHS their last loss two weeks ago with a 12-1 lopsided win at Andalusia.

CHHS took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Caden Bryan singled and scored on a double by Lawson Scarbrough.

The Trojans went up 4-0 in the next inning as Walker Stallworth walked, and with two outs Bryan, Jackson Giles and Chance Pollard hit consecutive doubles for the 4-0 advantage.

Andalusia threatened in the top of the fourth inning with two base runners before Giles snagged a line drive from his second base position.

Pollard made a great play in center field to end the fifth when he tracked down a line drive for the third out on a dead sprint.

The Bulldogs had runners on first and third and two outs in the top of the sixth inning, but catcher Cole McWhorter threw a dart to the CHHS third baseman, Scarbrough, to nail the base runner that was too far off the bag, and end the inning.

Pollard led the Trojans at the plate with three hits, Bryan had two, while Scarbrough, McWhorter and Giles had one hit apiece.

The Trojans are at home again on Thursday when Enterprise comes to Troy.

“That will be another big game for us,” said Coach Whitton. “They will come in here ready to go, and we are going to have to match their energy and get off to a fast start and control the game.”
