For the sixth consecutive year, the Team Up to Clean Up volunteer campaign is giving locals an opportunity to pick up litter and clean up the streets of Troy.
“The most important thing that this does is bring awareness,” said City of Troy Special Projects coordinator Leigh Anne Windham. “We’ve got these groups out picking up litter in the community. It brings awareness to not litter and to consider what the litter does to our community.”
Representatives of one local Troy group said participating in the cleanup effort is their way of blessing the community.
“This was our third year doing it and we couldn’t have been more excited to do it again this year,” said Vine church associate pastor Jason McLeod. “We went to the Downtown Square and picked up trash there and the surrounding roads. With 15 people with picked up four full big bags of trash. It is our way of helping to keep the city clean and hopefully encouraged someone else to do the same if they see us.”
McLeod said this won’t be the only time this month the church is volunteering for the event.
“We have more small groups throughout the church signed up to do it later this month,” McLeod said.
“We get to love on folks in the area and invite them to our church or any church for that matter.”
To get involved and volunteer, you can go online to troyal.gov and fill out the necessary forms or call Leigh Anne Windham at 334-670-6025.
“We provide groups with anything they may need for the clean-up from trash bags to trash picker sticks,” Windham said.
“This campaign as grown each year. This past year we have had more Troy University groups clean up and I thought that was really awesome because they see the importance of keeping they city clean even though they only spend a few short years here.”
