Play Ball: Troy hosts the Miracle League

A hoard of laughter, smiles and softballs flying across Riddle Pace Field could be seen Monday night. Three teams from the Miracle League came out to participate in the annual event.
“It is extra special to have it at Riddle Pace and for the community to come together tonight,” said Shelia Compton, a loving mom and volunteer. “The best part is just seeing everyone come out and be with one another.”
This is only the second year that the Miracle League has played at Riddle Pace, which Compton said made the players feel like pros.
“All the kids are ecstatic to be able to come out to the field and play,” Compton said. “You can just look out and see all the smiles on everyone’s faces, even the people in the stands watching. Listening to the conversations going on and the Troy athletes mingling is the best thing you can see. This is a night where the kids and adults do not feel different.”
Players from the Cubs, Braves and Angels are all assigned to a Troy Trojan buddy from the baseball team.
“The most joyous thing to see is my players interacting with these kids,” said Troy head coach Mark Smartt. “You only see joy tonight and that’s because for everyone tonight it is just a game. We don’t have to see failure or the toughness that comes with being an athlete. It is wonderful to witness everything be about just participating and having fun. It gives our players a unique opportunity to see joy and be a part of something bigger.”
Over 50 players from the league came out and played tonight. This event kicks off the season for the teams.
“We put this on because it is something where we can get the community involved and the college does a wonderful job of helping us,” Compton said.
The Miracle League games are every Monday and Thursday night at the Miracle League Field by the Troy Recreation Center.
