CENTREVILLE, AL. – Seniors Brock Huner and Will Reeves came through clutch Friday night as Charles Henderson High rebounded with a 2-1 win in Game 2 over Bibb County in the Class 5A playoffs, after dropping a 10-0 decision in Game 1. The two teams will meet again Saturday, 1 p.m. at Bibb County, to settle the best-of-three series.
Bibb County was hot at the plate in the first game for the 10-0, five-inning victory, but Huner kept the Choctaws off the bases most of the evening in Game 2, with Reeves delivering a big two-out, two-RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning to break a scoreless game and give CHHS a lead they would not relinquish.
Huner pitched a complete game and allowed one run on four hits, striking out five batters.
In the bottom of the fourth, Cole McWhorter reached first with one out after he was hit by a pitch. Following a fielder’s choice by Walker Stallworth, Keonte Brantley reached first via a walk. Reeves brought in Stallworth and Brantley when he ripped a single on the left side to put the Trojans up 2-0.
The Choctaws inched closer with an RBI single in the seventh by Kaden Kornegay, bringing the score to 2-1. With the potential tying run at second base, Huner forced a groundout to end the game and send the series to game three.
“We could not catch a break in the first game, and it seemed like everything went their way, but that’s how baseball works,” CHHS Head Coach Matt Whitton said after the second game Friday night. “But credit to our guys for sticking in there and finding a way to win in Game Two and getting back here to Game Three for tomorrow. I told them in-between games, we took a punch in the face, they gave us their best shot, now let’s give them ours. Brock Huner pitched a heck of a game, just dominated, and gave us a chance to win. We also got the big hit by Will Reeves late.
“I challenged our guys, for everybody to do their part. Strikeouts, so what? Kick a ball, so what? It’s going to take everybody in our uniform to get to where we want to go, and it starts Saturday. We need everybody locked in and bringing their A-Game and ready to go Saturday.”
The Trojans finished with two hits in the second game. Along with Reeves’ two-run single, the Trojans also had a hit by Brantley.
In the first game, the Choctaws wasted no time in scoring, taking a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Kaden Kornegay doubled, Brooks Connor walked, and Drew Watts hit a three-run homer to left-center field. Brody Seals also walked and scored in the first for a 4-0 Bibb County lead.
Bibb County added one in the third when Seals singled and scored on a double by Drake Dial, and the Choctaws pushed three more across in the fourth as Kornegay singled, Connor reached on a bunt single, Watts doubled, Horton singled, Landon Dial reached an infield error and later scored for the 8-0 lead after four innings.
Dial was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the fifth, Tanner Smelley singled, Kornegay got his fourth hit in as many at-bats, and Horton singled to drive in the next run for a 10-0 lead and the 10-run-rule.
CHHS managed only two hits off of Bibb County pitcher Brooks Connor in the first game, with Lawson Scarbrough and Cole McWhorter each getting a single.
Bibb County touched CHHS pitching for 14 hits over five innings.
A spot in the third round of the playoffs will be on the line when the Trojans once again match up with the Choctaws on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
