“The leading cause of death in trauma cases is uncontrolled hemorrhage,” said Jacob Fannin, owner of Shady Grove Tactical. “It’s really unacceptable in 2019 for anyone to bleed to death if they do not have a fatal injury. We have the technology and everyday civilians can have the ability to fix this on the fly.”

Fannin leads the “Stop the Bleed” training in Troy and he will be hosting a free training Saturday for anybody to learn the process of stopping hemorrhaging in trauma situations.

“This ‘Stop the Bleed’ campaign began after the shooting in Las Vegas at the Jason Aldean concert, so it was built around the active shooter or terrorist threat events, but we want to impress on people that this could be useful in a farming or industrial accident, a motor vehicle crash – really a variety of situations where someone could be injured with a need to stop the blood flow.”

Fannin said the training focuses on four distinct areas of care following a traumatic event: the deliberate and immediate use of tourniquets, wound packing for junction wounds, chest seals for penetrating trauma and patient positioning and airway management.

“If you get shot in the arm, leg or chest, simple interventions can save someone’s life,” Fannin said. “The problem is you’ve got to be trained. It’s not that complicated sometimes to save a life, you just need to know how and have the right equipment.”
