The Saving Our Youth Organization presented its 2019 Overcomer Scholarship Awards to Ja’Nirah Lampley of Pike County High School in Brundidge and Alexis Caldwell of Luverne High School in Luverne.

Lampley has been listed on the A/B honor roll throughout her school years. She  is committed to  Troy University and will enroll fall semester. Lampley received at $1,500 scholarship from the Saving Our Youth Organization.

Caldwell has maintained a 4.4 GPA since first grade. She is committed to Lurleen B. Wallace Community College in Andalusia. Caldwell received a $1,000 scholarship from the Saving Our Youth Organization.

Lashonda Spikner Martin, founder and chief executive officer of SOY, said both young women excelled academically high school and are outstanding leaders.

Martin said the scholarship recipients were chosen from an outstanding slate of candidates.

“To be eligible for the scholarships, each candidate had to have a 2.8 GPA and have already committed to a two-year community college or a trade or technical school or to a four-year university and could not have a full ride scholarship,” she said. “They also had to submit a letter of recommendation and a listing of their voluntary community service. A 1,000-word essay was also a requirement.”

Martin said two enterprising young women were selected for the SOY scholarships.

“SOY is confident they both will be successful in whatever profession they choose,” she said. “We congratulate them and wish them all the best.”
