Thursday night, kids in the summer reading program at the Troy Public Library were challenged to solve a murder mystery to earn a $50 prize.

For this year’s murder mystery, the theme was Comics Fest and the participants were asked to dress as their favorite cosplay characters. There was also a best costume prize, and Amelia Hill who was dressed as the joker was chosen as the winner.

With a crime scene set up and three different areas to look for hidden clues, the kids either working in teams or individually walked around trying to uncover the crime and decide who murdered the victim.

Teresa Colvin, who will be completing her last summer as Children’s Librarian and doing the summer reading program, said, “This makes 20 years that I’ve actually done a murder mystery. It’s an annual event that we do once a year in the summer for the teens, and I’d say its their favorite event of the summer.”

“We do different events each week,” said Lindsey Fannin the new Children’s Librarian who started last month. “Last week we did a minute to win it game and next week we’re doing a Star Wars escape room.”

The kids will be put in a room to try to figure out different codes and passwords to get out.

This summer reading program takes about 50 teens ages 12 to 18 during the summer, and this year these kids enjoy many different activities and events based on the theme ‘A Universe of Stories.’
