The Pike County Bulldogs enacted revenge on Alabama Christian in their 16-0 win over Alabama Christian Academy last Friday night. Now, they turn their sights on extending their region winning streak when they host Houston Academy on Friday night in Brundidge.

After being shut out by the Eagles a season ago, the Bulldogs left no doubt on Friday night on the road.

“We got better offensively and defensively,” said head Fred Holland. “We had a pretty good week of practice. Our kids, our coaching staff has done a good job preparing them. As a result of that we played a pretty decent game. We still have a lot of work to do, but the kids are playing a lot better.”

Mistakes and a failure to take advantage of opportunities plagued the Bulldogs a season ago. This time, the script flipped and the Bulldogs were the ones that played a clean game and it was reflected on the scoreboard. Cleaning up those mistakes was a point of emphasis during last week’s practice.

“We did a little better,” Holland said. “We did things better than we did the week before. The guys understand the importance of having a good practice.”

The Bulldogs welcome in Houston Academy for their home opener on Friday night. The Bulldogs rode their momentum gained in last Friday’s win all week during practice.

“We realize it’s a region game and we have to play well to be able to compete in our region,” Holland said. “With the preparations we have been doing this week, I think we will matchup pretty good with Houston Academy.”

The Bulldogs have won 11-straight region games. Their last region loss came against Montgomery Academy in 2017 when the Bulldogs were in Region 3. They hope to remain undefeated in Region 2 with a win on Friday.

“The guys understand that region games are very important for getting into the playoffs,” Holland said. “You can’t get into the playoffs without winning region games. They take it seriously.”

The Bulldogs defeated Houston Academy 39-7 on the road last season. The Raiders won their opener against McKenzie 28-21 last week.

“They are going to run the ball,” Holland said. “They have a pretty decent quarterback throwing the ball. I think they will do a lot of play action passes and things like that. They lean a little more towards the Wing-T. I think it gives them a better chance to block teams and run.”

Kickoff between the Bulldogs and Raiders is scheduled for 7 p.m.

“We are excited because we have been on the road the last two games,” Holland said. “Playing at home it gives us a little more time to prepare. Our kids are always excited about playing at home.”
