BEAUREGARD, AL – Charles Henderson High senior running back Jonathan Carter rushed for 132 yards and three touchdowns as the Trojans defeated Beauregard High School 27-7 on the road Friday night at Richard L. Brown Field.

The Trojans improved to 2-0 in the Class 5A, Region 2 standings and 2-2 overall while Beauregard slipped to 0-3 in region play and 0-5 overall.

“This is our second region game and our second region win,” said CHHS Head Coach Brad McCoy. “It feels great, and I feel great for our players. They had a great week of practice. It is always tough to go on the road anywhere, especially at Beauregard. We did play sloppy there at the end and we’ve got to clean those mistakes up. But defensively, they played strong and the offense played really good at times. I think we capitalized on most of our possessions, and only punted one time in the ballgame so that is always pleasing. I think we came out of it for the most part healthy.”

Beauregard received the opening kickoff, and the Hornets wasted little time scoring, when junior quarterback Hunter Gasaway found junior wide receiver Tyler Gordon open for a 60-yard touchdown strike, and a 7-0 BHS lead.

CHHS got on the board two possessions later when the Trojans took over at the Beauregard 26 yard line following a bad punt attempt, and Carter scored three plays later on a 1-yard plunge up the middle. Hayden Bush kicked and it was 7-7 with 6:31 remaining in the first quarter.

The Hornets were forced to punt on their next series, but another bad snap squibbed into the end zone, with CHHS defender Jaden Scott recovering for a Trojan touchdown, and a 13-7 advantage with 5:15 showing in the first quarter.

Carter scored his second touchdown of the night with on a 5-yard carry with 9:02 remaining in the first half, Bush kicked, and it was 20-7 Charles Henderson High.

Neither team could score until the third quarter, when Carter punched it in from 2-yards away, Bush was good on the PAT, and it was 27-7 with 3:35 remaining in the third quarter, which held up to be the final score.

In addition to the big rushing night for Carter, senior quarterback Pooka Jones was 11 of 18 in passing for 119 yards.

As the season progresses, McCoy believes the Trojans have continued to improve.

“I think we are improving, but we have got to clean up the penalties,” said McCoy. “We are off next week, so I think that came at a really good time. We’ve still got three offensive linemen banged up and may get one of them back for the Greenville game in two weeks. We’ve got to get healthy, we’ve got to get well, and we are about to get some much needed rest for these guys. I’m proud of the win.”

CHHS is off next Friday and will host Greenville High in another key region matchup on October 4.
