Challenge 14 is the featured exhibition through January 4 at the Johnson Center for the Arts’ lower gallery. The exhibition is a not-to-miss opportunity for residents and visitors during the holiday season, said Aaron Johnson, JCA preparatory and designer.
“Challenge 14 is the second juried show for the Johnson Center for the Arts,” Johnson said. “Challenge 14 is so named because artists were challenged with creating a work of art that would fit in a box 14x14x14 inches.
“The exhibit features 67 pieces by 28 artists from three states, Alabama, Georgia and Florida,” Johnson said. “Troy artists are well represented in the show with six. Only Montgomery has more with seven.”
There is also representation locally from Glenwood and Goshen and from the area including Auburn and Opelika.
“Some Challenge 14 artists are veterans and several are newer artists,” Johnson said. “Challenge 14 features paintings, drawings, sculptures, encaustics, photographs and pottery and a variety of subjects including landscapes, portraits, abstracts, surreal art and realism. There is a good variety in both mediums and subject areas.”
Johnson said Challenge 14 upholds the Johnson Center for the Arts standard of quality for exhibitions.
The juror for the Challenge 14 juried art show is Bruce Phillips Jr, associate professor of art at Tuskegee University.
An artists’ reception will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, December 5 at the Johnson Center for the Arts. The reception is an opportunity for the community to meet the artists and hear them talk about their work. The reception is free and the public is invited.
The Johnson Center for the Arts at 300 East Walnut Street in downtown Troy is open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and until 3 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free.
