The second phase of Troy’s downtown sidewalk revitalization project will begin in January 2020.

The sidewalks to be replaced are South Three Notch Street from Church Street to Love Street, West Church Street from South Three Notch to the Pike County Courthouse, and West Elm Street from North Three Notch to the alley before 101 W. Elm Street.

Melissa Sanders, planning and zoning administrator, said a meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 6 at the City Council Chambers for affected property and business owners to hear about the construction and ask any questions they might have.

“This is so the business owners that front these sidewalks can asks questions in regard to scheduling and how access is going to stay open,” Sanders said. “They need to know who to call and contact when they need to. T.J. Kelley with CDG Engineers, Matt Geisler with Geisler Contracting, and a City representative will be in attendance to discuss the project and to answer any questions or concerns regarding the upcoming construction of the sidewalks.”

Sanders said the construction will begin that week or the week after.

The project is the latest Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) project to be approved by the council, which applied for the grant for this project in 2017.

Replacing downtown sidewalks is a part of the Vision 2020 Downtown Plan.

The bid was awarded to Geisler Contracting at a cost of $469,667, of which the Alabama Department of Transportation will pay 80 percent, leaving the city’s cost at $100,573.

This is the second phase of rehabilitation for downtown sidewalks. The first phase replaced sidewalks on South Three Notch Street from Love Street to Elm Street, East Church Street from Three Notch to Elm and South Market Street from Church to Elm.

Sanders said the next TAP project to come up will be the construction of a multi-use sidewalk along Elm Street. It will provide a pedestrian and bicycle path connecting Troy University to downtown.

Each of the projects is part of the Downtown Plan Vision 2026 of the City of Troy seeking to revitalize the historic area.
