For six years, Steve and Jennifer Garret, owners of Piggly Wiggly 231 and Piggly Wiggly North Three Notch Street in Troy, have raised money for the Pike County Heart Association. This year is no exception.

The in-store fund-raiser annually begins in late January and runs through February, Heart Month.

The cashiers at the Troy Piggly Wiggly locations are now selling the “hearts for healthy hearts” and all funds are donated to the American Heart Association through the Pike County Heart Association.

“The money raised has helped in research, education and other programs of the American Heart Association,” said Jimmy Phillips, a member of the Pike County Heart Association. “Both of Steve and Jennifer’s fathers have had heart-related problems, but, are both doing fine because of the strides that have been made in heart research, advances in the treatment of heart disease and in raised awareness of the prevention of heart disease.

“I take my hat off to Steve and Jennifer for their fund-raising efforts and their support of the Pike County Heart Association,” Phillips said.

Troy Bank& Trust Main Branch is also selling hearts.

The dates have been set for the upcoming Pike County Heart Association’s events, Phillips said.

The annual Red Cap (Heart Survivors) Breakfast hosted by Park Memorial United Methodist Church Men’s Breakfast Club will be at 7:30 a.m. on February 22.

“The Survivors Breakfast will honor heart disease and stroke survivors as well as their caregivers,” Phillips said. “The annual Hear Walk at the Troy Recreation Center will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. on February 27. The Heart Walk will honor heart and stroke victims and the public is invited to participate in the walk and other activities planned.
