The Brundidge City Council met in regular session Tuesday night and moved ahead with the project to construct sidewalks in the Galloway Road area that will connect with the existing sidewalks.
The sidewalks are being constructed with Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) funding. The city will open bids on the TAP project on February 13, with construction to begin soon thereafter.
The sidewalks will run along Windmill Drive from Veterans Boulevard to Galloway Road and along Galloway Road from 6th Avenue, traveling along Galloway Road, turning south on Henderson Street and east on Veterans Boulevard before ending short of Main Street.
The total cost of the TAP sidewalk project will $481,303.75. The TAP award to the city is $385,043.00 and the city’s match is $96,260.75.
Mayor Isabell Boyd said the sidewalk project will be of great benefit to pedestrians, including children.
“Sidewalks make foot travel easier and much safer and the City of Brundidge is always concerned about the safety of our citizens,” Boyd said.
Temeka Teague, intervention program director/family advocate at the Pike Regional Child Advocacy Center in Troy, addressed the council to express appreciation for the council’s financial support and to remind the mayor and council members that April is fast approaching.
“April is Child Abuse Prevention Month in the United States,” Teague said. “April is dedicated to raising awareness of child abuse and to preventing child abuse.”
Teague told the council members that the Pike Regional CAC will have pinwheels, T-shirts and blue ribbons for sale in an effort to raise awareness of child abuse and to raise funds for the local CAC.
“Fund raising is extremely important to the daily operations of the Pike Regional CAC,” Teague said. “We want to thank the Brundidge City Council for its support of the CAC and our programs. We would also like to thank you for your continuing interest in the Pike Regional CAC and ask for your continuing support of our local CAC and the children that we serve.”
The council reviewed the city’s financials for the first two months of FY2020. The findings were that the city is tracking well.
The Brundidge City Council meets at 6 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at Brundidge City Hall. The meetings are open to the public.
