After months of work and anticipation, it was time for the big race on Sunday – the Pinewood Derby.
The Cub Scouts of Pack 41 have been pouring hard work into their vehicles since getting their kits in December and finally saw the fruits of their labor at Sunday’s race.
“All we give them is a block of wood and four plastic wheels,” said pack leader Clay Register. “They shape the wood into whatever they want the cars to look like, and then they also have to meet a weight limit; they work hard on them.”
In addition to the fun of the race and the building, Register said building the cars teaches the Cub Scouts new skills.
“It’s a lot about working with your hands,” Register said. “There’s also a lot of physics with it too with aerodynamics and everything – they even polish down the axles to reduce friction.”
The Cub Scouts learn many new skills during their time in the pack, from how to properly and responsibly use a pocket knife, to setting up camp and how to be responsible in nature, to the importance of physical activity and stretching.
“There’s a wide range of life skills that they learn in cub scouts,” Register said.
The Pinewood Derby was especially exciting this year as the pack was able to purchase a new racetrack with the help of sponsorships from local businesses including Troy Bank and Trust, Troy Nissan, North Alabama Fabricating Company,
Spurlock Scrap and Pike County United Appeal.
