Trojans split pair of games against Oak Mountain and Opelika

J.B. Sanders doubled and scored on a single by Adrian Caldwell as Charles Henderson High defeated Opelika 5-4 in the second of two games Monday at Troy’s Riddle-Pace Field.
CHHS hung with Class 7A Oak Mountain in the first game of the day, but came up short 6-2 in the home opener for the Trojans.
Against Opelika, the Trojans took a 3-0 lead when Sanders was hit by a pitch in the first inning and later scored on a grounder to first by Caldwell. In the third inning Jaylen Deveridge reached on an infield error, Sanders singled to drive in Deveridge, and Sanders later scored on a misplayed Opelika ground ball.
Opelika scored two runs to cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fifth inning when Paul Goodman reached safely and scored on a single by Julian Duke, Latrell Gullatte walked and he scored after singles by Brayden Thomas and Andrew Parr.
The Trojans went up 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth when Bailey Sparrow singled and scored on a single by Caldwell.
Opelika cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the single as Jase Rhoades singled and later scored, and tied the score at 4-4 in the top of the seventh inning on a walk by Thomas, who scored on a single by Rhodes.
In the bottom of the seventh inning Sanders doubled to lead off the inning, reached third when Sparrow hit a grounder that the shortstop could not handle, Cole McWhorter walked, and Caldwell singled for the 5-4 Trojan victory.
Sanders and Caldwell each had two hits against Opelika, while Sparrow, Quay Rodgers and Ben Reeves had one hit apiece.
Sanders worked hard on the mound allowing only two runs – none earned – over 4 2/3 innings. Deveridge and McWhorter finished out the game with McWhorter getting the win in relief.
Against Oak Mountain, CHHS, 1-2, picked up single runs in the fifth and seventh innings, and got solid pitching on the day against Oak Mountain.
Oak Mountain got on the board in the top of the first inning when Jake Rivers singled and later scored on a single by Cole Sester.
The Eagles scored three in the top of the fourth inning as Davis GIlliespie reached on an infield error, Stone Evers walked, Stephane Moraski also reached on an infield miscue, Gillespie scored on a balk with Evers and Moraski coming across on a double by Drew Rowland.
CHHS got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning when Ben Reeves singled and later scored to cut the lead to 4-1.
Oak Mountain went ahead 6-1 in the top of the seventh inning as Rivers and Mitchell Pierce walked and both scored on a double by Gillespie.
The Trojans scored their final run in the bottom of the seventh when Deveridge singled and scored on a triple to the left field gap by Sanders.
Against Oak Mountain CHHS was led at the plate by Deveridge with two hits, while Sanders, Sparrow, McWhorter, Caldwell and Reeves had one hit apiece.
Caden Bryan and Deveridge each worked on the mound for the Trojans against Oak Mountain.
Cole Sester got the win for Oak Mountain, allowing one run on four hit while striking out 10.
CHHS travels to Opp on Thursday.
