The 2020 Pike County Heart Walk got the heart pumping through a variety of activities including walks around the upper track and Zumba on the court.
The court featured booths from several health and wellness organizations in the community as well as booths with information about heart health.
And while residents browsed the tables and walked the track, Troy Recreation Center’s jump club put on a demonstration of how healthy it is to jump rope.
Participants were also led in dances to get moving on the floor while everyone awaited a heart healthy meal and the revealing of door prizes.
“This event has been going on a long time now and I’ve been coming own to share health and wellness information with the community,” said Kelly Mitchell, vice president f the American Heart Association Georgia and North Florida Division. “Our mission is to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives. Years ago it used to be about mending people, putting people back together; but we have evolved into focusing on teaching people in their youth to prevent heart disease. About 80 percent of heart disease is preventable.
Mitchell said people need to realize how serious hearth health is – heart disease kills more people than the top six cancers combined, she said.
