The Goshen High School football team heard the news they were being moved up to Class 3A in December. The Eagle basketball team found out this week they will be making the same move beginning next season.

“I think it’s going to be a good thing,” head coach Daniell Powell said. “I really like the new alignment for basketball. I think for basketball it’s a good fit because the teams are all in the same proximity. There aren’t many long drives.”

After hosting the Class 2A Area Tournament in each of the last five seasons, the Eagles’ challenges will ramp up when they move up a class next season.

“We are going to have to keep building and working hard,” Powell said. “It’s going to be a challenge moving up to 3A. We have to keep grinding and working.”

The Eagles will now make up Area 4 in Class 3A. They will make up a four-team area along with New Brockton, Opp and rival Pike County.

The two teams have not met regularly in recent years. Next year they will not only meet twice, but an area championship may be on the line when the two teams square off.

“We are getting back to the old rivalry,” Powell said. “I think it’s going to be exciting. A lot of the guys know each other. It’s been a few years since we played each other in basketball or football, so renewing the rivalry is going to be very exciting for the fans and the players. It’s going to bring a lot of energy to the rivalry because it hasn’t been played in a couple of years.”
