Terra Cotta and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pike County will present the Big and Little Gardens: An Outdoor Learning Adventure from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 4, at Terra Cotta Home and Outdoor Market at 351 Montgomery Street in Troy.
“We’re very excited and appreciative of this fundraising opportunity offered to us by Terra Cotta,” said Melinda Conner, Bigs director. “A grant that we depended on for funding has run out and we are having to find other ways to generate the money that we need to operate. Terra Cotta was planning to have an outdoor learning opportunity for those who are interested in learning more spring gardening. They realized our need and offered us this opportunity.”
The classes will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. The morning classes from 9 until 11 a.m. are “Southern Living Plants,” presented by Flowerwood Nursery, “Outdoor Decorating” presented by Napa Home and Garden and “Hydrangeas: New Varieties and Care” presented by Rhonda Flowers.
The afternoon classes will be “Stenciling Pots,” presented by Susan Berry and “Gardening and Food Preservation,” presented by the Pike County Extension Office. Afternoon class times are from 1 until 3 o’clock.
“There will be an Easter Egg Hunt beginning at 11 a.m. for children under 12 who are accompanied by a registered adult,” Conner said. “The registration fee is $10 and includes a hotdog and hamburger lunch.”
All proceeds from this event will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pike County.
“Big Brothers Big Sisters will also receive a percentage of sales made during the Big and Little Gardens: An Outdoor Learning Adventure so we encourage everyone to come out and enjoy this day of learning fun and support Big Brothers Big Sisters at the same time,” Conner said.
Big Brothers Big Sisters currently has 50 matches but also has 125 boys and girls waiting and wanting a match.
“We actually have more little boys requesting a Big than we do little girls, but we have a huge need for both,” Conner said.
