Pike County now ranks 16th in per capita cases of COVID-19 among Alabama counties.

According to the ADPH dashboard, Pike County has 266 confirmed cases and one death.

Lowndes, Bullock and Butler counties are the top three for per capita infection rates, with 307, 248, and 471 cases respectively.

Dr. Jodie Dionne-Odom, a specialist in infectious disease with UAB Health, warned Wednesday that “COVID-19 is not gone.”

Dionne-Odom said the state has nearly doubled the daily case rates since the lockdown was in place in May, growing from an average of 250 new cases per day to almost 500 per day. “We are not surprisingly seeing cases go up as we open,” Dionne-Odom said. “There is clearly a relationship between reopening and the number of cases we are seeing right now.”

As of Wednesday, more than 21,625 cases have been confirmed in Alabama with 739 deaths. More than 5,558 of those cases were confirmed in the last 14 days.

Dionne-Odom also said that testing rates are holding steady at about 5,000 per day, which indicates the increase in cases is not tied to an increase in testing.
