Marbury, AL – The defense of Marbury High held Charles Henderson’s offense twice in the final three minutes of the game to scratch out a 20-13 win over the Trojans Friday night in an AHSAA Class 5A pre-season jamboree at Marbury High School.

Both teams will open the regular season next Friday night.

Trailing 20-13 with 5:36 to play in the game, CHHS drove to the Marbury 3-yard line, but could not punch it in for a score. Marbury was forced to punt on their next possession, with the Trojans taking over at the Bulldog 22, but Marbury intercepted a pass with 1:19 to play and ran out the clock for the victory.

Marbury took an early 6-0 lead when running back Ethan Gomez ran in from a yard out, and the two-point conversion was not successful with 1:49 to go in the first period.

The Trojans tied the score at 6-6 with 5:55 remaining in the first half, driving 54 yards in seven plays. CHHS freshman running back Zach Coleman rambled in from the 3, the extra point was not successful, and the score was tied 6-6.

CHHS senior running back J.B. Sanders put the Trojans ahead 13-6 on a 38-yard run up the middle, and the extra point by Landen Holley was good. The Trojans began the drive on the Bulldog 45, and took only four plays to score with 1:30 to go in the half.

Marbury took the kickoff to open the second half, and put together a nine-play, 75 yard drive to tie the score at 13-13, with Gomez scoring his second touchdown of the night on a 3-yard jaunt, and the extra point was good with 7:27 to go in the third period.

The Bulldogs went up 20-13 with 5:44 to play in the same on a 25-yard pass from quarterback Jack Thompson to Cody Whitford, and the extra point was good.

CHHS then drove from their own 48 to the Marbury 3, where they faced first and goal, but two runs and two passes did not result in any points.

Marbury turned the ball over on downs with 1:19 to play, but on the first play from scrimmage CHHS was intercepted and the Bulldogs ran out the clock for the 20-13 victory.

Sanders led CHHS in rushing with 71 yards on eight carries and one TD, Coleman picked up 37 yards and one touchdown, while senior quarterback Cam Foley completed four passes for 89 yards. Gomez led Marbury in rushing with 150 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries.

CHHS is at home to open the regular season Friday, Sept. 28, vs. Montgomery Catholic for a 7 p.m. kick in Troy’s Veterans Memorial Stadium.
