The Goshen Eagles softball team continued its winning ways Thursday, as it defeated county rival Pike County 12-2 in five innings.

Goshen scored in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout from Shelby Jo Vinson.

The Eagles would score three more times in the inning to take a 4-0 lead, and never looked back from there.

“This was a good end to a good week for us,” said Goshen head coach Dee Hughes.

“We played three games this week, and we were able to come away with three wins.”

Goshen scored 12 runs on just seven hits, thanks in large part to nine walks issued by Bulldog pitcher Aliyah Holland.

“We had to throw our second pitcher since our starting pitcher was out with the flu,” said PCHS head coach Aaron Young.

The Eagles used those free passes to be extremely aggressive on the basepaths, stealing a total of nine bases.

Pike County got on the board in the second when Monique Mills reached on an error, advanced to second on a passed ball, reached third on another passed ball and scored on a wild pitch.

Pike County’s only other run came in the third, when Tierra Hall scored on a wild pitch.

Goshen held a 9-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth, and was able to put the game away thanks to an RBI single from Rachel Senn and an RBI double fro Vinson to make it 11-2.

Vinson took home on a passed ball to make it 12-2, and end the game via the 10-run rule.

The rest of Goshen’s runs came in the second and third innings, when the Eagles scored one and four runs, respectively.

Senn finished the game 3-4 with four RBIs and a stolen base. Vinson finished 1-3 with two RBIs and a stolen base.

Niyoka Slater and Amanda Griggs were terrors on the basepaths, as both Eagles finished with three stolen bases each.

For Pike County, Hall finished 2-3 with a stolen base and a run scored, while Kristen Lewis was 2-3 with a stolen base.

Despite the loss, Young said his team performed admirably.

“We played well today,” Young said. “We’re hitting better, and we just played better all around.”

The loss also continued Pike County’s winless season.

“We’re getting better, in spite of us not winning a game all season, and it’s really all about getting better,” Young said.

The two teams will meet again Monday at 4:30 in Brundidge.
