The Charles Henderson Trojans have started the 2020 season 0-2, but head coach Brad McCoy and the Trojans are hopeful things will turn in a positive direction beginning Friday night when they host Andalusia.

It’s been a challenge in the early weeks for the Trojans. The Trojans have been tasked with altering their schedule numerous times thanks to COVID-19. Charles Henderson’s game last week against Early County was canceled and after taking a week off, the Trojans return to region play to take on the Bulldogs this week.

“We’re trying to hang in there,” McCoy said. “I think the players and the coaches are doing the best we can dealing with the circumstances. This week we have been dealing with the hurricane coming through. We haven’t been able to practice the last two days.

After falling to Marbury in the jamboree, the Trojans have started the season with losses to Montgomery Catholic and Greenville their last time out. It’s the first time they have started 0-2 since the 2017 season.

“Any time you have an inexperienced football team it takes some time to figure out what players need to be in what spots.” McCoy said. “Sometimes they don’t have a lot of football under their belt and they need to play more. Sometimes that doesn’t happen as quickly as you want it to and it might happen later in the season. The football season is long and we have a lot off football in front of us. We are taking it one week at a time and hopefully we see some improvement like we want to.”

Last week’s time off provided McCoy and the Trojans some time to readdress some things and get healthy in key spots.

“We used that time to get better,” McCoy said. “We had some guys that were banged up in the Greenville game, so it gave us time to heal up.”

Region foe Andalusia comes to Veterans Memorial Stadium this Friday night. The Bulldogs come in with one win on the season over Rehobeth. They fell to Pike Road last week, 39-18.

“They’re a good football team, their record just doesn’t show it,” McCoy said. “They played a Faith Academy team that went undefeated last year and a Fairhope team that is very talented and athletic. They have had a tough schedule. Hopefully the time off has given us a chance to prepare.”

In their four games this season, the Bulldogs are averaging 21.5 points per game, while the defense has surrendered nearly 25 points per game.

“They are very multiple on both sides of the ball,” McCoy said. “They like to play with tight ends and motions. They do a lot of different things well. They have a very talented quarterback with physical running backs and they big on the line of scrimmage. Defensively, they give you different looks depending on what personnel groups you have on offense. They are sound. Coach Trent Taylor has been coaching close to 30 years, maybe longer. He has a prepared football team that is very athletic and experienced.”
