The Organized Community Action Program based in Troy has received a CARES Act grant through the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs in the amount of $806,000.

The grand award will provide assistance to OCAP’s seven county service area that includes Bullock, Butler, Covington, Crenshaw, Dale, Lowndes and Pike counties.

OCAP Executive Director Wanda Moultry said the funding will be used to support persons who have been affected by COVID-19 whose gross income is 200 percent of the poverty level.

As an example, Moultry said, one person whose gross monthly income is $2,127 will be eligible for the grant funds. For each additional member of the household, add $747.

“The CARES Act grant funds may be used to assist with rentals, water bills to include sewage and garbage, health and medical expenses, and food,” Moultry said.

“The grant funds may also be used for rental expenses but not mortgages,” Moultry said. “Applications for the grants must be made in the name of the head of the household.”

Monday, October 5 is the date OCAP will begin accepting applications for the CARES Act grants. 

“We are now able to receive clients in the OCAP building with masks and social distancing,” Moultry said. “Those who want to apply for the CARES ACT grant funding may come into the office at 507 North 3 Notch Street in Troy or call 334-566-1712.
