Troy University’s Relay for Life festivities were held Friday night at the university’s Tailgate Terrace.

Co-chair Caitlin Coffey said this year’s goal was to raise $15,000.

Preliminary numbers on Saturday showed that the fundraiser yielded about $19,000, and that’s before other fundraising events throughout the coming week.

According to Coffey, there will be a scene night Thursday at the Front Porch, and the cover charges will go to benefit the Relay for Life event.

Phi Mu sorority will hold its annual spaghetti dinner Thursday night at the Baptist Campus Ministries from 5-8 p.m.

The cost is $3 for one plate or two plates for $5.

“You get spaghetti, bread, salad, dessert and drink,” said Courtney Bryant, a Phi Mu sister. “We’ve always done our spaghetti dinner. The student body really participates.”

According to Bryant, the reason Phi Mu got involved in the University Relay for Life event, was because most of the members have been affected by cancer.

“Our new adviser is a cancer survivor, so it just means a lot to us,” Bryant said.

Alpha Tau Omega fraternity was one of the participants at Friday night’s event.

The brothers decided to participate because one of their brothers lost his mother last May to cancer.

“It’s more of about coming together and helping our brother,” Justin Walters, a ATO brother said.

Walters said the fraternity was still collecting money but had raised around $1, 300.
