Spring break is just around the corner for students in Pike County.
Troy City schools, Pike County schools and all private schools in the Troy area will be on spring break during the week of March 16.
Some public high school students will be looking forward to a break after taking the Alabama High School Graduation Exam this week.
Mike Hall, principal of Pike County High School, said that PCHS has been preparing for the tests since the beginning of the school year.
“We prepare all year long. We don’t know what exactly is on the test, but we do know what to expect, so we teach those skills in the classroom,” Hall said. “We are constantly monitoring and giving additional help to identify skills on the test.”
Pike Liberal Arts School will give the Standard Achievement Test on April 3, 6, 7, 8 and 9.
Dee Bennett, the assistant head master for PLAS, said the school is excited for this year’s test.
“Pike Lib has scored nationally at the top 25 percent in all areas of the test, so we are excited to take the test this year,” Bennett said. “We help our students prepare by using the Alabama course of study, national achievement standards and a variety of supplemental curriculums.”
Grades second through fourth will be taking the test, along with sixth and eighth graders. Bennett said that parents can help insure their children’s success by encouraging them to do their best.
“Parents should make sure their children are well rested and have a good breakfast. Parents should also encourage the students to do their best without causing them anxiety,” Bennett said.
Spring break will last from March 16-20.
School will resume on March 23.
