Peanut Butter Festival time: Y’all come!

Thirty –one years ago, the Brundidge Historical Society hosted the first Peanut Butter Festival on the lawn of the Bass House in downtown Brundidge.

On Saturday, the grounds of the historic Bass House will, again, be the site of the annual harvest and heritage celebration that pays tribute to the town’s proud heritage in the peanut butter industry.

Lawrence Bowden, BHS president, said the Peanut Butter Festival has a full day of activities planned with the 5K Peanut Butter Run getting things off to a fast start.

“Runners are the largest volume of peanuts grown in the United States so it is a given that the Peanut Butter Festival should have a 5K Run,” Bowden said. “The Bass House grounds in downtown Brundidge will be the site of the Peanut Butter Festival activities with continuous entertainment at the Knox Ryals Pavilion, old-time demonstrations, a mule-drawn cane mill, arts and crafts, the kids’ barnyard, hog callin’ and chicken callin’ contests and homemade cakes, cookies and pies.

“Just for starters, we’ll have all kinds of festival foods and fried peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, boiled peanuts, roasted corn, collard greens and cornbread. You won’t go hungry.”

At 1 p.m. the Nutter Butter Parade will be the main attraction along Main Street with all kinds of nutty things.

It’s an anything goes parade. Mules and wagons, tractors and prancing pigs… anything that causes a smile to come across faces is welcomed. Just line up at the Piggly Wiggly and parade-on.

There is no admission to the Peanut Butter Festive just come and enjoy a day the way it used to be when folks came from all around the county with a little money in their pockets after a successful and blessed harvest season.

Pumpkins Around the Square

Fall is in the air so it’s that time of year when thoughts turn to roasting marshmallows and toasting pumpkin seeds and ghosts, goblins and other fun and scary things.

With that in mind, on Thursday afternoon from 3 until 5 p.m., Downtown Troy will host Pumpkins Around the Square. It’s free; it’s fun and everyone is invited.

Pumpkins Around the Square will provide an afternoon of fun-filled, family fun.

There will be trick-or-treating, photos for a costume contest and a variety of fun activities for kids.

Everyone is invited to come enjoy the Pumpkins Around the Square and visit the downtown shops and then, while downtown, dine downtown.

Oktober Fest offers a sense of Gemutlichkeit

Oktober Fest is an attempt to reproduce the Bavarian sense of gemutlichkeit – cordiality.

And, that’s exactly what those, who attend Oktober Fest in downtown Troy from 4 until 9 p.m. Saturday, October 28, will experience — cordiality, Southern style.

Oktober Fest is free and everyone is invited.

The festive event will feature live music, balloon art, face painting, glitter tattoos, henna tattoos, inflatables, superheroes and princesses and permanent jewelry.

And, what would Oktober Fest be without pretzels and lemonade, coffee and cotton candy?

Oktober Fest is a fun event for all ages and it’s free.

And, while downtown, take time to visit the variety of restaurants and eateries around and off the square and enjoy their hometown sense of cordiality.
