On Wednesday, the Downtown Dothan Hoops Classic revealed the bracket for the 2023 tournament to be held Dec. 26, the first time Charles Henderson has ever competed in the annual basketball tradition.
The Charles Henderson Trojans earned their debut in the tournament by winning the Dothan Turkey Classic in November. As a result, Charles Henderson will play Ashford in the first round on Dec. 26 at 3:30 p.m. at the Dothan Civic Center.
In other first round matchups, Dothan plays Carroll, Eufaula faces Georgiana, Dale County meets Providence Christian, Northside Methodist battles Geneva County, Wicksburg faces off against Geneva, Abbeville will play Headland and Rehobeth matches up with Houston Academy. A total of nine teams in this year’s tournament qualified for the state basketball tournament last season.
First round games are Dec. 26-27 with the quarterfinals taking place on Dec. 28, the semifinals being played on Dec. 29 and both the consolation game and finals occurring at 5 p.m. on Dec. 30.
The Hoops Classic is an annual tradition that has been taking place at the Dothan Civic Center since 2006. Proceeds from sponsorships, ticket sales and concessions are dispensed among the 16 participating athletic departments with the funds being divided up based on how many games a team plays in. So, the teams that make the finals and consolation game will receive the most awards. Since its inception, the Hoops Classic has donated more than $650,000 to participating athletic programs.
