Troy Softball drops heartbreaker to No. 25 Auburn

On March 19, the Troy Trojans lost 4-3 to the No. 25-ranked Auburn Tigers in extra innings at home.
Going into the eighth inning, the game was tied 2-2 when Auburn’s Makayla Packer hit an RBI triple that gave the Tigers a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the eighth, however, Troy’s Libby Baker drove home Taylor McKinney for the tying run.
Neither team managed to get into scoring position in the ninth inning but Auburn’s Icess Tresvik scored on a Troy error to give the Tigers the 4-3 win.
McKinney went 3-for-5 at the plate for Troy with a triple and two runs, while Kayden Dunn hit a double and Cassidy Boltz hit a home run. Alyssa Faircloth took the loss in the circle, striking out six batters and giving up five hits and one earned run in five innings pitched. Libby Baker also pitched five innings fanned four batters, while giving up four hits and two earned runs.
Anna Wohlers led Auburn at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run, an RBI and a run. Auburn’s Shelby Lowe got the win in the circle, striking out four batters and giving up two hits and no runs in two innings pitched. Meanwhile, Maddie Penta struck out 12 Trojan batters and gave up six hits and two earned runs in eight innings pitched.
Troy returns to conference play this weekend as James Madison comes to Troy for a series on March 22-24.
