As many as 828 million people regularly go to bed hungry. Among those are 42 million Americans who face hunger each and every day.

Donna Kidd, Pike County Salvation Army service center manager, said those who have never known real hunger are blessed.

There is a vast difference between being hungry and knowing hunger.

Each year, the Pike County Salvation Army’s Empty Bowls Luncheon can, perhaps, in a small way, help feed the hungry.

“The Pike County Salvation Army’s Empty Bowls Luncheon is set for 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on April 5 at Bush Baptist Church on George Wallace Drive in Troy.

For a donation of $20, each participate will enjoy a home-made soup lunch with dessert and tea and an empty hand-made clay bowl to take home as a reminder of those who know what real hunger is like.

Ed Whatley, musician and singer, will be featured during the dinner hour.   

Empty Bowls will also feature a silent auction with items made/crafted by local craftsmen and from local businesses in support of Empty Bowls 2024.

The silent auction includes handcrafted items, a free oil change, a signed football from Troy University and Auburn to date and a Nick Saban print.

Auction-quality items are greatly appreciated. Auction donations will be accepted at the Salvation Army Service Center on South Brundidge Street in Troy.
