After dropping the first two games of a Sun Belt Conference series to the No. 23-ranked Texas State Bobcats, the Troy Trojans picked up a win on Sunday.
Texas State opened the series with a 9-1 win over Troy on April 5. Audra Thompson hit a solo home run for Troy’s lone run of the day. Haley Pittman took the loss in the circle, striking out one batter and giving up five hits and two earned runs in two and 1/3 innings.
JJ Smith went 2-for-2 at the plate for Texas State with a home run, one RBI and one run. Jessica Mullins earned her 20th win in the circle, striking out three and giving up one hit and no runs in four innings pitched.
Texas State secured the series win with an 8-0 shutout victory over Troy on April 6. Texas State pitcher Mullins earned both a shutout and a no-hitter with five strikeouts.
On Sunday, though, Troy dragged the 23rd ranked team in the country into extra innings before ultimately snatching the win.
The two sides remained tied 3-3 going into the 12th inning when Thompson hit her second home run of the weekend for the eventual game-winning run. Thompson went 2-for-4 on the day with a homer, a double, three RBIs and a run. Anslee Finch went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run. Libby Baker earned her 11th win in the circle, striking out one batter and giving up 11 hits and three earned runs in 12 innings pitched.
For Texas State, Piper Randolph went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Mullins struck out eight and gave up seven hits and no earned runs in six and 2/3 innings pitched.
“What an absolutely gritty performance by our team,” Troy Coach Eric Newell said. “On the road, against a ranked Texas State, in a tough environment, our girls just refused to give up. Our entire staff is incredibly proud of the fight in this team.”
Troy takes a break from conference play this Wednesday, April 10, for a matchup with Mercer at 3 p.m. at home.
