The Zion Chapel Lady Rebels closed out play in the Class 2A Softball South Regional Tournament with a 9-8 win over the GW Long Lady Rebels in the runner-up game on Thursday.
After losing to Long by a score of 4-3 on Wednesday, Zion Chapel bounced back to best Long in an exciting rematch. ZCHS led 8-4 going into the top of the seventh when Long rallied to score four runs and tie things up. In the bottom of the eight, Riley Bannin hit an RBI single into left field that drove Emily Rhodes home for the scoring run in walk-off fashion.
Riley Bannin went 4-for-5 at the plate for ZCHS with two RBIs and two runs, while Kaylee Hodge went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs. Kennedy Hussey also went 2-for-4 with a run. Sydney Boothe struck out seven batters and gave up eight hits and three earned runs in seven innings pitched.
For Long, Anna Free went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and a run. She also pitched six and 2/3 innings and fanned five batters along with giving up 11 hits and six earned runs.
Both Zion Chapel and the Regional Champ – Wicksburg – will advance to the State Tournament next week in Oxford.
