The Special Olympics State Games scheduled for this weekend at Troy University has been cancelled due to the threat of inclement weather.
“After discussions with the State Games leadership and board members, everyone felt it was in the athletes’ best interests to cancel the games,” said Dean of Students Herbert Reeves, who coordinates the games on TROY’s behalf.
Reeves said a decision to reschedule some events would take place at a later date. He also expressed appreciation to the volunteers, who he credits with the ultimate success of the State Games.
The games, which have been held on the Troy Campus for 11 years, routinely bring some 1,000 athletes and more than 250 coaches and chaperones to the campus and is kicked off with the Alabama Law Enforcement Torch Run that brings the Olympic Torch from north Alabama all the way to Troy for the opening ceremonies.
