On Wednesday, three-star rated defensive end ShuMond Johnson announced his commitment to play college football at Troy University.

Johnson is a 6-foot-3-inch, 245 pound Fairburn, Ga., native that originally signed to play football at Eastern Michigan back in December. He held offers from Austin Peay, Ball State and others before signing with Eastern Michigan. He was rated as a three-star edge by 247Sports and the 179th ranked prospect in Georgia.

Johnson played high school football at Creekside High, helping his team to a 5A State runner-up finish this past season. He recorded 51 tackles, 10 tackles-for-loss and nine sacks as a senior. Johnson was able to gain a release from his letter-of-intent with Eastern Michigan on May 8 and will instead enroll at Troy.

Heading into 2024 Troy must replace a vast majority of its pass rush production with the departures of TJ Jackson (11.5 career sacks), Richard Jibunor (30 career sacks) and Javon Solomon (33 career sacks). No returning Trojan had more than 1.5 sacks last season. New head coach Geard Parker has been hard at work filling out his roster to try and fill that void.

Parker had already signed two freshman defensive ends Jabril McNeil and Tarshun Griffin, junior college (JUCO) transfer defensive tackle Cheick Kaba, freshman defensive tackles Kevin Norwood, Jermaine Paramore and Dylan Mann and Cincinnati transfer bandit Jah-Mal Williams. He’s also earned the commitments of JUCO transfer defensive tackles Jamel Fils-Aime and Kam Curry since the end of the spring.
