Juneteenth will be acknowledged and celebrated in downtown Brundidge on Saturday June 22 on the grounds of the Bass House on South Main Street.

Brundidge Mayor Isabell Boyd said the event is being planned by a group of Brundidge citizens and will be a spiritual extravaganza that will include local ministers, singers and community members for a time of coming together.

“Everyone is invited to come, bring a lawn chair, and enjoy meaningful entertainment and uplifting fellowship and free food,” Boyd said.

Juneteenth, or “Freedom Day” is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.

It was on June 19,1865 that Union soldiers, led by Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger, landed in Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that all slaves were free.

On June 15, 2021, the U.S. Senate unanimously approved the bill that makes Juneteenth a legal public holiday.
