Local players earn All-State Baseball honors, Tyler named Player of the Year

A number of players in The Messenger’s coverage area have earned All-State honors and Ariton senior Myles Tyler was named Class 2A Player of the Year.

The Alabama Sports Writers Association (ASWA) released its All-State Baseball Team on Saturday. A total of four Ariton Purple Cats, two Pike Lib Patriots and one Zion Chapel Rebel earned Class 2A All-State honors.

Ariton outfielder Myles Tyler, pitcher Austin Evans and infielder Lawson Leger all earned Class 2A All-State First-Team honors, while pitcher Ian Senn earned Second-Team All-State. Tyler was also named the 2A Player of the Year. It’s the third year in a row that Ariton has had four representatives on the All-State team.

Tyler finished the season with a .413 batting average, .519 slugging percentage and .519 on-base percentage with five doubles, three triples, 35 RBIs and 32 runs. Defensively, he earned 40 putouts, one assist and held a .953 fielding percentage. Senn pitched 54 and 2/3 innings with 54 strikeouts, while holding a 2.68 ERA and a 6-1 record as a starting pitcher. He also held a .956 fielding percentage with 67 putouts, 20 assists and seven double plays. As a hitter, he earned a .231 batting average with 16 stolen bases, three doubles, two triples, a home run, 17 RBIs and 24 runs.

Evans pitched 70 and 2/3 innings with 54 strikeouts, while holding a 1.78 ERA and an 8-0 record as a starting pitcher. He also earned an .875 fielding percentage.

Leger earned a .347 batting average with nine doubles, two triples, four home runs, 43 RBIs and 44 runs. Defensively, he held a .904 fielding percentage with 34 putouts, 32 assists and two double plays. He also pitched 23 innings and struck out 14 batters, while holding a 1.52 ERA.

Pike Lib catcher John Lott earned First-Team All-State, while Luke Barron earned Second-Team All-State as a utility. Lott finished the season with a .436 batting average and .540 on-base percentage with six doubles, one triple, one home run, 14 stolen bases, 27 RBIs and 44 runs. He earned a .982 fielding percentage with 211 putouts. Barron earned a .474 batting average with six doubles, one triple, one homer, 30 RBIs and 22 runs. Barron pitched 39 innings and struck out 59 batters with a 2.154 ERA. He also held a .878 fielding percentage with 48 putouts.

Zion Chapel was represented by infielder Wes Braisted as a Second-Team All-State athlete. Braisted boasted a .455 batting average and .548 on-base percentage with six doubles, two triples, one home run, 26 RBIs and 30 runs. Braisted also pitched 44 and 1/3 innings with 60 strikeouts and a 2.70 ERA.
