After successfully hosting 18 softball teams (6U and 8U) last weekend for their state tournament, Troy Parks and Recreation is now set to host 27 additional teams for their softball state tournament. This weekend Troy is hosting the 10U, 12U, 15U and 18U teams. The tournament runs from July 5 – 9 with opening ceremonies on Friday at 2pm and the first round of games starting at 4pm. Most of the Troy teams will start their play at 7pm on Friday.
There is a total of six age divisions in Dixie softball, which means over a two weekend period Troy Parks and Recreation will host every Alabama Dixie age division and a total of 45 teams from all over the state.
Area restaurants, hotels and other businesses benefit from all of these teams converging on Troy over two consecutive weekends. Moe’s Original BBQ co-owner Richard Boyles commented, “Obviously, when summer hits and the university students go home we see a decrease in sales, but last weekend we saw a noticeable increase from the girls and their families coming to eat with us and we’re extremely glad that Troy is hosting another round this coming weekend.”
Mayor Jason Reeves said, “These tournaments have a tremendous impact on the local economy. Dan Smith and his staff are world class and do a wonderful job when it comes to hosting events.”
Smith commented on the support Troy Parks and Recreation receive from the city, “We’re thankful to work for a mayor and city council that is very supportive of the children and the people of the community and our department especially.”
Smith continued, “The community should see a lot of young ladies in uniform along with their families and I hope everyone will take a moment to just stop those families and welcome them to Troy and tell them it’s great to have you here.”
Smith finished by saying, “I’ve been very pleased with the attendance from the community. It’s well known that the college softball world series every year is the most watched event on ESPN every year. It’s amazing the talent we have in Troy in girls’ softball and it’s very enjoyable to watch. We hope everybody will come support these young ladies.”
