On Monday, Troy Police Chief Randall Barr released a news statement announcing the arrest of Montgomery resident Demetrius Williams in connection to a recent motor vehicle theft in Troy.
According to the release, Troy Police Department responded to a report of a stolen motor vehicle in the 100 Block of U.S. Highway 231 on Aug. 11 at 8:34 p.m. Officers were able to locate the stolen vehicle, a white Peterbilt semi-truck without a trailer, within 12 minutes of the call being dispatched, according to Barr. Officers attempted to stop the truck in the 100 Block of Pike County Road 774, but the driver of the stolen truck refused to stop and led TPD officers on a pursuit that entered into Montgomery County and continued into the City of Montgomery.
TPD was assisted by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Montgomery Police Department and Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Troopers in the pursuit. The stolen truck was eventually stopped on Taylor Road near U.S. Highway 231 in Montgomery and the driver was taken into custody without further incident.
According to the release, the driver was 52-year-old Leonardo Demetrius Williams, of Montgomery, and he was arrested and charged with felony Attempting to Elude Law Enforcement and First Degree Theft of Property. Williams was then transported back to Troy, where he was processed through the Troy City Jail before being transported to Pike County Jail. He is currently being held on a $10,000 bond.
“The Troy Police Department would like to thank the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Montgomery PD and ALEA for their assistance in this case,” Barr said. “Great teamwork and cooperation across multiple jurisdictions brought this case to a successful end with no injury to law enforcement, other motorists or to the suspect.”
