The Charles Henderson Trojans (2-2, 2-1) had a rough night on the road Friday night, losing 63-6 in a Class 5A, Region 2 game against The Montgomery Catholic Knights (5-0, 2-0).
Montgomery Catholic wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, capping off a 10-play drive in the Knights’ first possession of the game, scoring on an 8-yard touchdown run by Jamarion Williams to put Catholic up 7-0.
After a Charles Henderson punt, the Knights went three-and-out and a special teams disaster put the Trojans on the scoreboard. On a punt attempt, the snap went over the punters head and the punter attempted to kick the football out of the back of the end-zone only for it to stop in the end-zone instead. Charles Henderson’s Braylon Banks covered up the ball for a touchdown. The PAT was blocked, however, and Catholic held on to a 7-6 lead. Catholic would then reel off 56 unanswered points as the Trojans had no answer offensively or defensively for the Knights.
In the second quarter, Catholic scored on a 4-yard run from Giovanni Hayner, Jamarion Williams threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Michael Sheffield and Jamarion Williams scored on a 2-yard run.
In the third quarter, Catholic continued to pour it on. Kingston Preyear threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to BJ Bedgood and then heaved a 19-yard scoring pass to Wilson Hodges. Montgomery Catholics Josh Harriell ended the period with scoring runs of two and 11 yards.
The final score of the game came when a Charles Henderson pass was intercepted early in the fourth quarter and returned 40 yards for a touchdown, bringing the score to 63-6.
The Trojans gained 22 yards on their opening possession of the game and tallied just one combined yard on their next 10 possessions. CHHS tried to finish the game on a positive note, marching on a 13-play, 71-yard drive down to the Catholic 2-yard line before time expired on a fourth-and-goal attempt, which was stuffed.
Catholic rolled up 415 yards of offense and held the Trojans to just 97 total yards. CHHS also turned the ball over three times. For Charles Henderson, Kellen Stewart completed 10-of-19 passes for 66 yards and an interception. Kameron Johnson caught three passes for 44 yards. On defense, Nemo Williams earned four tackles and a tackle-for-loss, while Deshawn Burden totaled five tackles.
Charles Henderson remains on the road next Friday, Sept. 27, at Benjamin Russell for another region game.
