Goshen runs past Pike Lib in region showdown

The Goshen Eagles (5-2, 4-1) scored 22 points in the first five minutes of Friday’s Class 2A, Region 3 home game against the Pike Liberal Arts Patriots (6-2, 4-1) and never looked back, winning 64-27.

Goshen senior Szemerick Andrews was a human highlight reel for the Eagles. He amassed 376 all-purpose yards with 300 yards and three scores on just 11 rushing attempts. He also caught two passes for 39 yards and a touchdown and returned a kickoff for 37 yards.

Goshen was nearly unstoppable in the first few minutes of play. The Eagles scored on the first drive of the contest with Jayden McNabb cashing in on a 58-yard scoring run to put the Eagles up 7-0 with 10:17 left in the period.

Pike Lib then fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Goshen tacked on a 16-yard touchdown run from Andrews with 10:13 left in the first quarter. A two-point conversion extended the lead to 15-0. On Goshen’s next drive, Andrews exploded to score on a 59-yard run that extended the lead to 22-0 with 7:33 left in the opening quarter of play.

Pike slowed down the onslaught with a 6-play scoring drive that Dalton Jordan capped off with a 1-yard touchdown run with 5:06 left in the first quarter to cut the lead to 22-7. A 64-yard pass from Dawson Bradford to Jackson Booth set up the 1-yard scoring plunge.

In the second quarter, Andrews added a 34-yard touchdown run with 9:44 left in the first half to extend the lead to 29-7. On Pike’s ensuing possession, Goshen defensive back Tyler McLendon intercepted a Bradford pass near midfield and returned it to the 1-yard line. McNabb then scored on a 1-yard touchdown to put Goshen up 36-7 with 7:54 left in the half.

Pike answered on the next drive as Bradford heaved an 81-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Jackson Mitchell. The PAT cut the lead to 36-14 with 7:08 left in the half. Goshen answered right back, however, with a 2-yard scoring run from McNabb with 3:25 left to go up 43-14. With just 15 seconds left in the half, McNabb threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to McLendon to give Goshen a 50-14 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, McNabb added a 1-yard touchdown run. A 76-yard scamper from Andrews set up the score. Pike got back on the scoreboard with a 34-yard touchdown pass from Bradford to Sawyer Keck on fourth down with 11:12 left in the fourth quarter.

Goshen added a 35-yard touchdown pass from Layton Burgans to McLendon and Pike put the final score on the board with a 1-yard run from Bradford. An 85-yard kickoff return from Dougie Branson set up the score. The PAT was no good and Goshen retained the 64-27 win.

Goshen totaled 496 yards of offense with a staggering 413 yards on the ground, while Pike tallied 287 yards. The usually potent Pike running game mustered just 32 yards on the ground. Pike was penalized 10 times for 89 yards, while Goshen was flagged 10 times for 83 yards.

Along with Andrews’ big night on offense, McNabb rushed for 87 yards and four touchdowns on 16 carries, while completing 3-of-4 passes for 48 yards and another score. McLendon caught two passes for 44 yards and one touchdown along with 35 yards on five carries.

On defense, Landon Chandler led the way for the Eagles with 12 tackles, three tackles-for-loss, one sack and a forced fumble. McLendon tallied seven tackles and an interception. Jacoby Brunson earned five tackles and two tackles-for-loss.

For Pike Lib, Bradford completed 13-of-29 passes for 255 yards, two touchdowns, one interception and a rushing touchdown. Mitchell caught four passes for 112 yards and a touchdown. Jordan rushed for 34 yards and a touchdown on 15 attempts.

Pruitt Vaughan led the Pike defense with 11 tackles and a tackle-for-loss, while Rhodes Baker tallied 10 tackles and three tackles-for-loss. Kade Brookins recovered a fumble and netted four tackles.

Pike Lib is back at home next Friday for another region contest against Highland Home, while Goshen is off next week.
