The Troy Trojans split a Sun Belt Conference series with the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns this past weekend at home.
Troy started the weekend off with a 3-0 sweep over Louisiana on Oct. 18. The Trojans won all three sets 25-15, 25-14 and 25-23 for the dominant win.
Tori Hester led the Trojans with 19 kills, one ace and 10 digs in the win, while Amiah Butler added 14 kills, two aces, seven digs and three blocks. Janelle Stuempfig tallied 26 assists and Jordan Sinness dished 15 assists with two aces. Cailin Demps led Louisiana with six kills, two digs and six blocks.
On Oct. 19, Louisiana rallied to best Troy 3-2 in a back-and-forth match. Troy won the first set 25-19 but Louisiana tied things up by taking the second set by a score of 25-19. Louisiana took the lead in the match with a 25-23 win in the third set but Troy tied it again with a 25-23 win in the fourth. In the fifth and final set, Louisiana took the match with a 15-10 win.
“Didn’t play clean enough volleyball to win tonight,” Troy Coach Josh Lauer said. “Service errors were way too high. Attack errors were way to high. We couldn’t stick to a good rhythm and it cost us. Kudos to Louisiana. They got stronger as the match went on and really took advantage of our inability to play consistently.”
Hester led Troy again with 21 kills, one ace, six digs and one block, while Kalina Calvillo chipped in with 19 kills and four digs. Butler added 15 kills and nine digs, while Stuempfig earned 31 assists and Sinness tallied 27 assists with one ace and 15 digs. Lauryn Hill led Louisiana with 16 kills, 12 digs and four blocks.
During the weekend, Hester became just the fourth player in Troy history to earn 1,500 career kills and 1,000 career digs. She now sits in fourth all-time in kills and 12th all-time in digs.
Troy is back on the road this weekend for a pair of conference matches against Arkansas State on Oct. 24-25.
