Local author Quintarries Upshaw to hold book reading at Troy Town Square

On Nov. 8, Troy native Quintarries Upshaw will hold a book reading for his new book, “The Journal of Broken Folk” on he Town Square in Troy at 5 p.m.
Upshaw is a Troy native who graduated from Charles Henderson High School and Troy University. Upshaw, whose background is in sociology, human services and social science, authored “The Journal of Broken Folk” to “address critical issues that impact individuals and communities today, from the struggles of mental health to the complexities of addition, racial trauma and family dynamics.”
Upshaw said that he draws on his experiences and professional background to craft the narratives that are described as both authentic and heart wrenching in the book. Upshaw is a member of the Pi Gamma Mu and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and is an advocate for trauma-informed care and is an advocate for awareness around mental health and social justice issues.
Some of the themes “The Journal of Broken Folk” explores include historical trauma, sexual assault and grief, mental health, resilience and racial trauma.
“This is book is a contemplation of the real struggles that often go unnoticed, yet define so many lives,” Upshaw said. “Through these stories, I hope to bring awareness to the traumas that intersect in our communities, while also showing that resilience and hope can emerge from even the darkest places.”
Upshaw will hold a free book reading on the Troy Town Square on Nov. 8 from 5 until 8 p.m. with light refreshments being served. Those planning to attend are urged to bring a folding chair, blanket and copy of the book to the event.
