Troy University announced on Thursday that Troy Trojan legend Osi Umenyiora would serve as Honorary Captain for this Saturday’s Homecoming matchup against Coastal Carolina.
Umenyiora was an All-Southland and All-Independent selection during his Troy career and was a pivotal piece to Troy’s transition from Division I FCS to Division I FBS. He set the school record for tackles-for-loss in a season with 20.5 as a senior, along with recording 15 sacks, which was second most in the country.
During his Troy career, Umenyiora amassed 278 tackles, 38.5 tackles-for-loss, 24 sacks, 71 quarterback hurries, three interceptions, seven forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.
Umenyiora was drafted by the New York Giants in the second round of the 2003 NFL Draft. He was Troy’s first player drafted since the move to FBS and was the first Trojan to ever be selected in the first two rounds of the draft.
Umenyiora went on to become one of the best pass rushers in the NFL during his career. He became the first former Trojan to earn All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors in 2005 and went on to become a two-time Super Bowl Champion.
Umenyiora finished his career as a two-time All-Pro, two-time Pro Bowler, broke the NFL record for forced fumbles in a season and was inducted into the New York Giants’ Ring of Honor and Troy University Sports Hall of Fame.
Umenyiora played for 11 years in the NFL for the Giants and Falcons. He recorded 376 tackles, 163 tackles-for-loss, 85 sacks, 35 forced fumbles, 13 fumble recoveries, one interception and five touchdowns during his NFL career.
Troy will host Coastal Carolina for Homecoming this Saturday, Nov. 2, at 3 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Umenyiora will serve as Honorary Captain for the Trojans.
