Trick or Treat! Trick or Treat! Trick or Treat!
Those three words were the order of the day on Halloween 2024.
Although Halloween was actually celebrated on Thursday, the celebration was in high gear in Troy on Wednesday night when Southside Baptist Church and CGI celebrated Halloween. According to those who were there, the attendance was outstanding and everyone had a “candy sweet.” good time.
The City of Troy celebrated Halloween with Pumpkins Around The Square on Wednesday that included kids’ games, candy and the fun and excitement of celebrating the season with friends.
The City of Brundidge celebrated Halloween with its traditional trick-or-treat and games event on the grounds of the historic Bass House
The staff and volunteers at the Tupper Lightfoot Memorial Library hosted a Haunted House a few days earlier so as not to conflict with the city’s trick or treat event. As always, the Haunted House, was a place of scary fun that is the trademark of Halloween.
Halloween’s origins can be traced back to the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain and on November 1. It was believed that on that day, the souls of the dead returned to their homes, so people dressed in costumes and lit bonfires to ward off spirits.
Although the holiday began in the Celtic regions it spread to other parts of the world. The first American colonists in New England were forbidden to celebrate it for religious reasons, however it enjoyed some popularity in the Southern colonies.
By the 1800s, fall festivals marking the seasonal harvest incorporated Halloween elements and Irish immigrants escaping the devastation Potato Famine brought with them many Halloween traditions that remain today.
